Mastodon have issued a statement confirming the death of their former guitarist and co-founder Brent Hinds, saying: “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident.
“We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent‘s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent.”
According to Atlanta News First, Brent Hinds was killed on August 20 in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta, Georgia. Police report that he was riding a Harley Davidson when the driver of a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard. The Fulton County medical examiner’s office confirmed his death. He was 51 years old.
And yeah – Mastodon and Brent Hinds split less-than-amicably in the past year, but who cares about any of that right now. One of the most unique guitar players in all of metal – and people’s friend, bandmate, brother, significant other, son, and whatever else – has tragically and suddenly died.
