Corporate-owned IP, much like video game characters, can have infinite lives — leading us to TRON: Ares, a follow-up to the 1982 TRON as well as 2012’s TRON: Legacy. Watch the film’s newly released teaser trailer below.
According to the official description from Disney, TRON: Ares “follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” Jared Leto stars as the titular Ares program, alongside a cast including Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.
Most exciting for all the TRON-heads out there is that Jeff Bridges is also a part of the cast, after having previously starred in the original TRON and TRON: Legacy. Whether he’ll be returning in his role as game designer Kevin Flynn remains unconfirmed, though.That said, the real star of Tron: Ares may be the original score by Nine Inch Nails, with Consequence Composers of the Year Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross officially composing the movie’s soundtrack. Fans can get a brief preview of NIN’s music in the trailer. It marks the band’s first proper release in five years, and comes ahead of a 2025 tour.

Norwegian director Joachim Rønning, having previously taken on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Young Woman and the Sea for Disney, helms this threequel, saying in a statement from February 2024 that “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. TRON: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”
TRON: Ares is currently set for an October 10th, 2025 theatrical release.
